Electroencephalogram (EEG)
This is a painless procedure in which we will monitor your brain activity through small electrodes that will be pasted to the surface of your scalp. You should expect to be at our clinic for at least 2-3 hours.
In order to obtain the most accurate testing, we ask that you take two simple steps prior to arriving at Sleep Insights:
- Please wash your hair thoroughly, but do not use conditioners or other hair products. Hair weaves and extensions must be removed.
- Please bring, and take, all of your normally scheduled medications unless otherwise directed by your doctor or the staff at Sleep Insights.
What to Expect
When you arrive at our clinic for your study, you will be greeted by our friendly staff. You will be given a tour of our state-of-the-art testing facility, and then shown you to your private bedroom and bathroom. After you make yourself comfortable, one of our Technologists will come introduce themselves to you. They will take a brief history and explain the procedure to you. Feel free to ask them any questions that you may have.
Once all of your questions have been answered and the procedure has been explained, the Technologist will begin applying the electrodes for your study. First, the Technologist will mark and measure your head using a paper tape measure and a grease pencil. This is necessary because each electrode needs to be placed in a precise location in order to accurately measure your brain waves. After the Technologist has completed the measurements, they will clean each spot with a conductive prep jelly. This jelly removes excess oils and skin cells to allow a clear reading. Finally, the Technologist will apply the electrodes to the surface of your scalp using hypoallergenic paste. This procedure is painless and generally takes about 40 minutes.
After all the electrodes are applied and checked for recording integrity, the Technologist will have you go through a series of tests to obtain a baseline of your brain activity. These tests may include, but are not limited to, hyperventilation (fast, deep breathing) and photic stimulation (strobe light testing). For the remainder of the test, you will be asked to lay still with your eyes closed and try to fall asleep.
When we have completed your study, the Technologist will remove all of the electrodes and clean the paste out of your hair. Any remaining paste or marks can be easily washed out using warm water and shampoo. We typically send the results of your study to your physician within 2-3 business days.
Failure to show-up for your scheduled procedure may result in a $100.00 no-show charge. Also smoking is NOT permitted on the premises or at any time during your stay.
